U2 frontman Bono responded to the story The Mystery of Jobs’s Public Giving,” in the NYTimes opinion pages telling readers that Jobs was indeed a generous giver through the Product(RED) campaign.

To the Editor:

As a founder of (Product)RED, I’d like to point out that Apple’s contribution to our fight against AIDS in Africa has been invaluable. Through the sale of (RED) products, Apple has been (RED)’s largest contributor to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria — giving tens of millions of dollars that have transformed the lives of more than two million Africans through H.I.V. testing, treatment and counseling. This is serious and significant. And Apple’s involvement has encouraged other companies to step up.

Steve Jobs said when we first approached him about (RED), “There is nothing better than the chance to save lives.”

I’m proud to know him; he’s a poetic fellow, an artist and a businessman. Just because he’s been extremely busy, that doesn’t mean that he and his wife, Laurene, have not been thinking about these things. You don’t have to be a friend of his to know what a private person he is or that he doesn’t do things by halves.

As U2 prepares to hit the Edmonton stage next week, all concertgoers are
being asked to do a favour — wear a red or white shirt and bring balloons.

On June 1, the internationally known band U2 will play their first show in
the capital city since 1997 at Commonwealth Stadium.

Titled (RED)monton “All Colours Bleed Into One,” the band is asking everyone
to wear a red or white shirt and to bring red or white balloons as a symbol
of Canadian pride and support for the (RED) and ONE campaigns.

Balloons however are being asked to remain deflated until after the opening
act is wrapped up.

U2 originated in Dublin, Ireland in 1976 and have sold more than 150 million
records.

The RED campaign was founded in 2006 by U2′s Bono and raises money and
awareness through a clothing campaign to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

The ONE campaign aims to increase government funding for international aid
programs and was originally founded by 11 non-profit humanitarian and
advocacy organizations.

The Global Fund was started five years ago by the United Nations as an innovative partnership of governments, nonprofits and the private sector to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The fund, which has invested more than $10 billion (US) in 136 countries, has begun to run out of money. Rock star Bono, lead singer of the band U2, is leading a commercial venture with well-known private companies, called RED, that is designed to replenish and stabilize income for the Global Fund.
