All I Want is You, Stuck In A Moment, New Year’s Day -  who’d have guessed these would be in the set list before this show began a few hours ago ?

Or that by the time With Or Without You arrived, ‘SHINE LIKE STARS’ was trending worldwide on Twitter.

Plenty of surprises on a memorable evening in Montreal when another capacity audience at the Hippodrome, was joined by a global audience listening online.

‘Tonight we want to give you as a gift to the world,’ Bono announced. ‘So tonight this show is being broadcast all over the world on U2.com, all over the world…’

Whether you were in the stadium or in your bedroom, this show took off again tonight – and it’s hard to believe there are only seven flights left.

‘We’ve taken our space station around the world,’ reflected Bono. ‘We’re nearly home, we’re going to have to find something else to do.

After all, Larry is a ‘fire-eater, a sword-swallower, the world’s strongest man.’ Adam? ‘The bearded lady…’ Edge? ‘Trapeze artist, high-wire act… and I will play the clown.’

It’s also the home city of another friend of the band, Leonard Cohen and his ‘Hallelujah’ found a beautiful home in ‘Streets’.

By the time With or Without You wherever we were in the world we were ‘shining like stars in the summer night…’

Another beautiful evening in Montreal, and a festival atmosphere on site all day. With folks hanging out in the ‘Fan Jam’ area since noon, by the time the band took the stage there were huge chants of ‘U2 U2 U2′ ringing around the stadium.

‘Give me one more chance, and you’ll be satisfied.
Give me two more chances, you won’t be denied…’

After that, nothing was going to go wrong for the people of ‘la belle province’ – from The Fly to ‘Streets’, from Mysterious Ways to Moment of Surrender.

To general delight, Bono spent much of the evening speaking French, reflecting on current issues of State and introducing the members of the ancient Irish House of U2.

‘Ce soir nous commencons notre tournee royale du Canada… nous sommes les Irlandais royaux.’

Larry he introduced as ‘Bonnie Prince William’, Adam as Kate Middleton and Edge as the Prince of Wales.

A glorious night reached its benediction as ever with the people’s light show.  ‘Eteins les lumieres Willie… voici Moment of Surrender. ‘

Like a scene from an exotic, magical kingdom, the rain finally started to arrive with serious intent halfway through as the band remained on stage to applaud the people of Montreal.

Seats are in place, lights ready to be flicked on and turnstiles poised to rotate for 160,000 U2 fans Friday and Saturday nights.

The claw’s real function is to make everything else look smaller.

“They wanted it to be an intimate show, the idea was that if you build something big you can make the stadium look very small,” said U2 Tour Director Craig Evans. “It’s a 150 percent success. It definitely makes the place look smaller.”

But Montreal is the only place where the band had to build its own venue.

The stadium took six weeks to build and cost $3 million and will require an additional three weeks to dismantle. Spectators will number 40,000 on the floor and the same number in the seated areas.

Jake Barry, U2 Production Director, says that the construction is sturdy.

“This may be temporary but it’s a solid, very formal, very professionally done venue, it encompasses proper facilities, concessions, things to entertain people who come down early,” said Barry. “We stress: do come early.”

Ticket sales for this month’s U2 concert in Moncton are increasing by the day as the event nears and the weather continues to improve, according to city officials.

When the iconic Irish rock band announced Moncton would be its final stop on the 360 Tour in North America, the city boasted it hoped to attract 100,000 fans to the Magnetic Hill concert site.

While city officials will not say how many tickets have been sold for the July 30 concert, they have confirmed ticket sales are continuing to move briskly.

Shane Porter, a city spokesman, said the buzz around the U2 concert series is growing and will only increase as July 30 gets closer.

“They’re saying it’s going to go down in the history books as the most successful tour in history, concert tour in history. So to have the last date of that show is pretty special,” Porter said.

Porter said preparations for the seating are well underway and the elaborate staging will start arriving in about a week and a half.

“With this tour, where it’s a 360 tour, there are actually grandstands being built over the area that we used as existing stagepads. So we had to actually come out further in the field and create a stagepad for this stage,” he said.

Porter said the city is finalizing the concert’s transportation plan, which is expected to be released next week. He said there will be some small changes to help traffic move more smoothly.

U2 has two concerts this weekend in Montreal. The band is expecting to draw 80,000 people to each show.

Biggest N.B. concert ever

Moncton officials are expecting the U2 concert to be the largest in the history of the Magnetic Hill outdoor concert venue.

The Rolling Stones concert drew 78,000 in 2005.

The city’s outdoor concert site has also hosted major acts, such as AC/DC, Bon Jovi, the Eagles and Tim McGraw.

When the U2 concert was announced, the city said it would cap the ticket sales at 100,000.
