Before rocking jam-packed Busch Stadium on Sunday night, Bono met with some honchos from the Danforth Plant Science Center to talk about the intersection of humanitarian and scientific issues.

U2′s frontman met with Dr. William Danforth, chairman of the center; James Carrington, president; and Martin Fregene, a native of Nigeria and director of the center’s BioCassava Plus program.

When he was introduced to Danforth, Bono started off with, “What an honor to meet you, sir…”

Fregene shared details with the rocker about the center’s work to combat hunger by improving the nutritional value and disease resistance of crops. Bono, obviously interested in the idea, asked a variety of questions about the Center’s research in relation to the developing world.

The conversation ended with this observation from Fregene: “Africa needs both technology and social action — we are the technology — you are the social action. We have to work together.”

The Ocean, 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, An Cat Dubh, Into The Heart, Another Time Another Place… what a set list the band opened with in St Louis. Actually, this was the one they opened with on another night in St Louis, thirty years ago when they first played here.

‘Thanks for sticking with us, we’ve been here before,’ recalled Bono. ‘Unusual little venue, at the Graham Chapel, Washington University.’

The Busch Stadium was definitely hotter than the Graham Chapel, boiling hot, and the temperature only rose when the band hit the stage with ‘Real Thing’ and the ‘Kraut rock circa 1991′ of  The Fly.

Some things haven’t changed, reflected Bono.
‘Larry is still upset over the fact that the name was changed from The Larry Mullen Band to U2.’ And  ‘Adam Clayton still believes that being in this band is a great way to meet girls.’
Bono’s needs too, remain those of a simple man: ‘Just give me 200 trucks, 400 tonnes of equipment and 56,000 people and I feel great..’

It was so hot you had to get undressed and for Elevation Bono invited on stage five shirtless guys who had the letters U, 2, 3, 6, 0 painted on their chests – clever!  Pride, Miss Sarajevo, Zooropa … can it really be true that in less than two weeks this tour will be done?

‘And I miss you when you’re not around
I’m getting ready to leave the ground…’

It’s been called one of the best concerts in decades and it comes to St. Louis Sunday night.

The stage has a set a record using a four-legged supporting rig nicknamed the claw. It set a record for being the biggest concert stage structure.

At 7 a.m. Friday, about 30 percent of the stage was in place, but as Cardinals spokeswoman Vicki Bryant explained, they had only unloaded 50 trucks of staging equipment and there are 50 more to unload.

Every date of the tour was sold out by April. However, they’re releasing about 100 tickets Friday morning.

Preparations are underway at Busch Stadium for the U2 360 Tour on Sunday night.

Fifty-thousand fans will pack the stadium, which is 6,000 more people than a sold out St. Louis Cardinals game.

On Monday, crews will start removing the grass. Tomorrow, the field will be covered. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, crews will be setting up the steel stage structure. On Saturday, crews will set up video and sound components.

The day of the show finishing touches will be put in place.

Doors for the concert open at 5:00 p.m. Sunday and the performance begins two hours later.
